Academy Softball Set to DominateWritten on the 3 July 2017 by SWSAS South West Sydney Academy of Sport (SWSAS) is on a real high at the moment, with the Academy's girls and boys Softball teams being the 'talk of the town', following multiple impressive performances, as individual squads and as individual players. A large number of players are in excellent form and gaining the attention of both State and National selectors. Third year scholarship holder, Breanna Evans is one of these. She has had a massive year and her selection into the Junior Australian squad came as no surprise. Breanna first picked up a bat when she was five, played the modified versions of the game as a child and has been a representative player for most of this time. Breanna lives softball and as well as being fully committed to her extensive representative duties and training she is also a level one umpire and coaches at a junior representative level. She will be part of the SWSAS leadership group as the girls and boys Softball squads head to Newcastle on July 14 to compete in the Australian Invitational Youth Games, where Breanna will pitch and also play third base. Head coach Peter Doherty said the girls performed brilliantly to defeat a highly talented touring USA team in the Southern Horizons Challenge two weeks ago, and were runners-up at the prestigious Waverly Easter Tournament against the nation's best. Doherty said the excitement of continued improvement continues to build, as we have been working very hard on skills all year. SWSAS Softball is an individual skill based program, we don't play many tournaments as a group but the girls understand their roles and they are very professional when playing as a team. It is all coming together nicely, there is a really good 'vibe' at training and we are confident in our abilities and really looking forward to testing our improvement at the upcoming Youth Games. The girls will be accompanied by the SWSAS boys' squad which is very rich in individual talent and as current Academy Games Champions; it would be fair to say they are heading to Youth Games as favourites. Doherty said, this will be the last tournament in a SWSAS cap for a large number of these young men and we wish them well.
